In 2009, New Life Center (NLC) partnered with Goodwill Community Foundation (GCF) to begin a tutoring program to help students pass their Grade 9 and Grade 12 exams. We wanted to offer extra lessons in English, Math, and Science to students who do not have the resources to get the extra help themselves - particularly the orphaned and vulnerable, and more recently local pastor’s children.
Hannah Mwamulima, Sandy Groves, and Emily Padilla were the tutoring teachers up until the end of 2017 at which point we reached out to find some local teachers to take over. In 2018 we hired Mr. Kalamba (Science), Mr. Phiri (Mathematics), and Mr. Kasonde (English) to teach the students. We currently teach Grades 10-12, Monday through Thursday about 9 months out of the year.
The tutoring program still is growing and changing as we figure out what is working and what is not, but we have seen an increase in the number of students we work with that are passing their exams. This is giving these students an opportunity to potentially find better jobs and maybe even go on to further education.
